Day Trips

***Background - Great Sand Dunes National Park***

1.

Breckenridge, this is a mountain playground, with skiing and winter sports, and then adventure park and activities in the summer.

Great Sand Dunes National Park. about 3.5 hours from home, this place has been a camping destination since i heard about it.

Manitou Cliff Dwellings, I remember being fascinated about the cliff dwellings when i learned about them in school and now they are a short hour drive from home. This would make a nice day trip with the springs, and and cave tour included as well.

Idaho Springs, Hot Springs, plus some cool other activities in the area.

Bear Creek Lake Park, this place is close to home within about 30 minutes, and has camping. Besides regular camping you can also rent yurts, or tents.

Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave.

Rifle Falls State park, This place is a little further from home (3 hours) but has good reviews for camping and hiking with little kids.

Cherry Creek State Park, this place convinced us almost immediately to invest in a parks pass. Besides being only a couple of miles (literally) from home, it has an amazing beach. We have yet to use the campground but hope to this summer. You can also rent boats and jet skis from the marina.

Roxborough State park, Another state park i have heard good things about, just 35 min. from home. It homes lots of hiking and beautiful rock formations, as well a visitor center

Glenwood Springs, both hot springs, and mountain theme park.

Estes Park, i'm not qute sure what sounds more exciting an areial tramway and amusement park in the summer, or dog sledding, and sledding in the winter.

royal Gorge Bridge and Park. This place as one amazing and terrifying suspension bridge over the gorge, this is a must do, we've got to see this.

Frisco (Dillon Reservoir), besides swimming and beach, you can rent boats, pontoons, fishing poles, etc. They also have chuck wagon rides, horseback riding, etc.

Red Rocks, Everyone in Colorado knows about the red rocks. They're huge red rock formations that are gorgeous. This is also a natural outdoor amphitheater where all the big concerts come to play. This park also has trials, and a restuarant.

Pike's Peak, This is the tallest point of the Rocky Mountains at over 14,000 feet, and just over an hour from home. This place is so elevated you have to follow special instructions when driving you car to make sure you make it. A shuttle service is available.

Mesa Verde (Cliff Dwellings), another amazing place to visit with a lot of history, it's a longer trip (7 hours) but i hope we can do it someday in the future.

Riverside Inn & Cabins, this place is 5.5 hours from home, however it's close to inter tubing and off roading. Through Backbone adventures you can rent ATV's, jeeps, or in the winter Snow Mobiles.

18.

Rocky Mountain National Park. Outdoor playground only an hour and a half from home.
