Seeing as how i work in a Restaurant that is open every day of the year, getting Holidays off is not a thing. Generally we only work 4 hours on Thanksgiving and Christmas, but this year seeing as how i'm on maternity leave i get the whole holiday season off! The kids really love cooking, and seeing as how our holidays are really just about the 6 of us (as far as celebrating) sometimes i over compensate to make up for the one Holiday together vs. the several we used to travel to in Washington. Though to be honest as much as i miss the big Holiday get togethers of my childhood, it's nice to get up with the family and just relax and enjoy each other for a day.
Yesterday I took Kira to the store to buy all the things we would need to put together a Thanksgiving feast! Brandon works today, so the kids and I were going to cook Thanksgiving dinner so it would be ready when he got off work today. Seeing as how I probably have gone a bit overboard, i spent quite a bit of time yesterday prepping different dishes, and/or cutting and chopping up veggies etc. Thank goodness i did this because last night half the family got some sort of stomach bug or food poisoning, so i think i'm now taking over dinner cooking single handedly without the kids. Cant' take any chances with Baby Bea in the house! The good news is everyone who was sick seems to be doing better overnight and hopefully will be able to eat some of our feast later assuming they are doing well throughout the day.
Our Dinner will include:
-Turkey (of course!, though i did really wanna grab a ham, It's Thanksgiving and the turkey is tradition so, one month till ham dinner for Christmas, hehe)
-Herb Stuffing (i mean we're having turkey so we sort of have to right?)
-Cranberry Whip (and i wanna say it's for the kids but it looked really yummy so it's all me, it's like a cross between walfdorf salad and pistachio delight, but with Cranberries and apples)
-Blue Cranberry Sauce (Cranberry sauce with blueberries and citrus, i made this last night and tried it, and it was delicious)
-Mashed Potatoes and Gravy (The gravy is the one thing i bought premade that just needs heated, for people that know me and Turkey Gravy the traditional way don't get along, i've found it to be a gross endeavor since i was a kid and honestly i rather have something out of a jar)
-Baked Mac and Cheese (this is Brandon's favorite holiday side dish so it is a must have each year)
-Green Bean Casserole (traditional food must haves right)
-Honey Roasted Carrots (Usually i hate the idea of sweet cooked carrots but being sweetened with honey vs. brown or white sugar might actually be good, and the kids like their carrots!)
-Pearl Onions in Cream Sauce (Favorite side dish from when i was a kid, my aunt made these every year for me and i couldn't get enough. They're easily made so easy dish that feels like home)
-Dinner Rolls
-Pumpkin Pie, and Apple Pie for desert! (mommy is just gonna pick these up from work, even though i'm more than capable of making pies, oven space and time are not my friends today)
With the exception of the Pies, Gravy and dinner rolls Everything else will be from scratch and homemade. I don't really feel bad about the rolls, since our family started making our own breads for dinner years ago, time and energy is simply a factor especially with Bea still less than a month old!
I will add pictures and recipes to my recipe page later today or tomorrow =)
